How important is proper filtration and circulation?

The filter is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a pool. A clean, properly functioning filter removes debris that can be seen, as well as some that cannot be seen. The vast majority of water problems are related to poor filtration and/or circulation. Before treating water quality problems with chemicals, be sure to check the operation and maintenance of the pump and filter. All the chemical products on the shelf will not help clear the water if the filter isn't able to remove dirt and debris from the pool.

  • Check to make sure the pump and filter are running a minimum of 8 hours a day.
  • Run pump and filter continuously if the water is already cloudy.
  • The circulation should be adequate throughout the pool, with no "dead spots".
  • Make sure that skimmers and main drain (if present) are not blocked.
  • Angle the return jets for maximum circulation-45 degrees down, all pointing in the same direction.
  • Backwash the filter when indicated by the pressure gauge on the unit, usually around 10-15psi above normal operating pressure.

Regardless of the type of filter, normal maintenance is essential and always involves two steps:

  1. Physical cleaning to remove loose debris.
  2. Chemical cleaning (every six weeks) to remove oils and stubborn, caked-on debris. Use Simplicity Filter and Cartridge Cleaner to "shampoo" the filter every six weeks.
